May Day 2008: Join us for International Workers' Day!
The Garment Worker Center invites you to come out with us and celebrate International Workers' Day, Thursday, May 1st, 2008 along with millions of workers and poor people around the world. In keeping with the Chicago tradition of 1886, we recognize and celebrate the national historic fight of those proud and powerful workers who won the 8 hour work day with a living wage. We invite you to join with us at 1pm at the Garment Worker Center on Thursday, May 1st, 2008 to march and celebrate international worker power! We'll start to march at the Center and later join the LA-wide May Day march that ends on 1st and Broadway. All of us, working and poor people keep our society functioning smoothly. We work in stores, restaurants, factories, hospitals, schools, or at home, raising our children, supporting our elders or disabled loved ones. Without all of us, Black, Latino, Arab, immigrant, native-born, Asian, Indigenous, White, youth, Queer, women and men --- this country would fall apart.
Come and have lots of fun and solidarity on a beautiful International Workers' Day. We are not intimidated by the recent anti-immigrant raids or last year's police brutality. We all work and fight together to get what we all deserve: decent housing, good schools, healthy food, access to health care, dignity, respect, and living salaries at work, security and stability for when we are disabled and reach an old age. There is enough for everyone. Fighting together we can make change and win! Made in LA screening: 05/23, Echo Park![]() We'll be hosting a screening of Made in LA at the Echo Park Film Center on May 23rd. Come by and watch the movie the New York Times has called "an excellent documentary... about basic human dignity." There will be a Q&A with members of the Garment Worker Center after the screening, and we'll also have select Fair Trade items for sale. Doors open at 7.30pm. Seating is limited, so come by early! Can't make it? No worries. You can also order a copy of the movie directly on our website. Sneak preview: GWC justice fundsWhat do you do if you want to give socially conscious presents, but your friends already have too many social justice t-shirts in their closet? Well, how about a donation that really means something? The GWC is dependent on support from induviduals like you, and we want to show you exactly where your money is going, which is why we came up with the GWC justice funds. Donate 50 dollars, and you'll be covering the costs for one worker meeting at the Center. A 200 dollar donation is enough to finance a whole wage claim workshop.
Donors will soon be able to get a unique justice funds certificate for a number of different donation levels ranging from 20 dollars all the way up to 4000 dollars. Check our website for details! Our work: Art groupWe've been busy the last few weeks preparing for our participation in the International Worker's Day demonstration on May 1st. Our members and volunteers have been meeting weekly to draw signs, paint our beautiful new banner and print T-Shirts with our silk-screen printing equipment. You've already seen the main banner at the beginning of this newsletter. We've put up some more photos from our art group up on our website, make sure to check them out here!
